Commencement 2009

As per the tradition started a few years ago by Matt Dobosenski, this years Commencement ceremony held on Sunday, May 31st 2009 was captured by time-lapse.

This is a time-lapse video of the Don Roberts ice rink going from the final stages of the 2008 Nobel Conference to the newly repaired ice rink. Earlier this year the cooling system failed and had to be replaced. In this video you can see the removal of the old cooling system followed by the installation of the new cooling system. If you ever wanted to see what is down there below the ice, here is your chance.

The video was created by taking a photo every minute from October 9th through November 30th and stitching them together. To try and shorten the video I removed most of the images where not much was happening such as each night and some of the weekends.

Here is the time lapse video of the 2008 Nobel Conference held in the Lund Arena at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter Minnesota. It was created by taking the images from 3 security cameras that grab photos every minute and combining them into one movie.

Here is the time lapse video of the Presidential Gala held on October 3rd 2008 in the Lund Arena. It is a combination of 3 cameras taking photos every minute. Unfortunately we were unable to capture some of the setup and tear down because our cameras were blocked by the curtains or lost power so machinery could be moved.

This past Saturday I spent the day at the new football stadium here at Gustavus Adolphus College. I started the day by placing a webcam in the home team’s radio booth to capture images for the Gustavus website as well as to create a time lapse video of the day. We also used that camera to stream video down to an HD TV in the concessions stand and to any computer on campus that wished to tune into it. Overall I think that camera worked very well and hopefully we can use one for future football games as well.

The following video is from the camera we have in Lund that was watching the construction of the new stadium. This camera has been steadfastly taking pictures of the construction for almost a year now and is time for us to finally take it down. It gives a good view of the stands and you can see all the fans taking their seats for the game.

Over the past week or so the turf installers have been busy installing the new “grass” in the stadium. They are not done yet. The yard markers and some of he edges are not finished yet and I think they still need to fill it in with “dirt”.

I put together a time lapse video of the progress so far. I cut out most of the night images to help speed it up a bit. If you have a powerful computer and a fast network connection, try the Large video, otherwise give the medium or iPhone size video a try. They are all three the same video with the only difference being the size and quality.

As you can see from the Stadium Webcams, the new turf is being installed this week. Hopefully this will make a good time lapse video. Speaking of time lapse videos, I have a few more of them to share. They are fairly large so unless you have a fast internet connection they may take a little while to download.

Each of these videos was made from photos taken approximately every 10 minutes over the course of the month. I also removed the evening and night images to make the video a little smoother and condense it down to the times where the most changes were happening. If anyone is interested in the full archive of images, let me know. I’ll try to make them available at some point in the future.

This morning we moved one of our webcams from the old stadium to the new stadium. I believe that the old stadium will be torn down soon so we needed to get all of our equipment out of there. Also we now have power available to us in the new stadium and therefore are able to put a camera in there. We have heard that the turf will be installed in the next week or so and hope to capture that in such a way that we can put together a time lapse video of it. I think we have some issues with the cameras network connection at the moment but hope to have those resolved soon.

I also have to say thanks to Rudy for updating the webcams page so that you can click on the image and get the full resolution version. The full size image is probably too big for most people to display on their computer without scrolling, but it looks great on my display.
