I have updated the time lapse videos to include images from May 15. In the latest video you can see that Perry is slowly shrinking and now the spadex is really showing the signs of all the hard work it did over the weekend. I assume that it will not be too long before it collapses. Any guesses as to when that will be?

May 12 – 14 camera 1. Smaller version available on youtube.
May 12 – 14 camera 2. Smaller version available on youtube.
May 12 – 14 camera 3. Smaller version available on youtube.

Also don’t forget that we have automatically created time lapse video created every hour available as well.

Auto generated time lapse of camera 1
Auto generated time lapse of camera 2
Auto generated time lapse of camera 3

Finally, it is not too late to come and see Perry. The flower is well past its prime, but still a wonderful site to see in person. Also if you try really hard you can get a tiny whiff of what it smelled like. After you visit Perry be sure to hunt for your picture here.

If you really want to get a good whiff of it you should try to come by sometime in the next 24 hours.

If you can’t make it in person, you can watch the live video.

So far our web server is handling the load, but just in case it can’t you can still get to the live video via ustream.tv on my ustream.tv page.

The automatically generated time lapse videos should be really interesting tonight.

After you visit Perry, don’t forget to look for a photo of yourself. If you don’t find it there, you can probably find it here with a little digging.

One of the good indications that Perry is getting really close to blooming is that on Wednesday at 1:00pm the bracts fell off. By looking at other Titan Arums it seems like the bracts fall about 2 or 3 days before it blooms. If you are interested, we happened to catch the event with our security camera software. The video of the left bract falling in “real time” at about 1 frame per second can also be found on youtube.

Thanks to Ethan Sommer we now have automatically generated time lapse video. The videos are recreated every hour with the latest images.

Auto generated time lapse of camera 1
Auto generated time lapse of camera 2
Auto generated time lapse of camera 3

I also have new time lapse from May 8th to May 10th. Looks like Perry is still growing.

Camera 1 also on youtube
Camera 2 also on youtube
Camera 3 also on youtube

As was mentioned in Brian’s post, our live streaming video via ustream.tv does have some glitches but since they upgraded some things this morning, it has been very reliable. We will try to keep an eye on it and restart it whenever we notice it is down.

And finally tonight, even though Brian says Perry can’t sign autographs, it appears that he has his own facebook account. Hopefully he will invite me to his blooming event.

So if you are on campus and tune in to channel 7, you can hear what is being said in the greenhouse. Also for those of you lucky enough to be on our wired computer network, you can view live video with sound from any of the three cameras. For more information about those cameras see the GusTV Events page.

For the rest of you who are following Perry’s progress, we are working on streaming video/audio for you as well. We now have a test page for those who are interested. It appears that the providers of this service ( ustream.tv ) are having some issues and therefore the video stream has been broken more than it has been working today. So if you would like to try it, please do. If it is not working, try again an hour or so later. Hopefully they will be more reliable before the big event.

Finally, there are a few new time lapse videos that were created earlier today.

As noted on Perry’s Blog, media coverage is increasing. Should make for an interesting week ahead.

The greenhouse is also looking for docents to help out with all of the visitors. If you are interested, there will be a informational meeting at 4:00pm on Monday in or near the greenhouse.

So, when is this plant going to bloom you may ask? Good question. I too have been trying to figure that out and the best answer I can come up with is May 11th or 12th. Why? Mostly because I will be out of town then and won’t be able to see it in person I have also looked at time lines for other Titan Arums and judging by where ours is at now, many of them seem to flower about 10 days or so later. However not all of them bloom that fast. Some of them take a couple more weeks to bloom, putting the bloom date closer to May 20th. I think I will stick to my guess of May 11th for now, or possibly May 13th. That would make quite a mothers day gift.

I also noticed today that the veins near the tips of the spathe were just starting to turn red.

In other news, it looks like Perry will be in the Minneapolis Star Tribune this Saturday. Hopefully our webservers can handle the extra traffic.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of many people here at Gustavus we now have a wolderful flowering Amorphophallus titanum also known as a Corpse Flower to Titan Arum. Thanks to this unique event we have been given an opportunity to put some of our “toys” to good use.

This afternoon we added a third Axis 207MW Network camera to the greenhouse to capture the rapid growth of the plant from as many different angles as we can. These three cameras are used to capture an image at 5 minute intervals for use on the Titan Arum Webcam page.

We are also capturing and archiving images at 1 minute intervals to be used for making time lapse videos of the growth. These videos are currently available on the GusTV Events page. They can also be found on YouTube and Google Video

And if those options are not enough, people located on the Gustavus campus can watch live video from these cameras as well. If you have a TV connected to the cable system, you can watch one of the cameras on channel 7. Also, computers connected to the wired network can stream live video from the cameras. You can find links for those video sources on the GusTV Events page as well.

Although they didn’t use our camera ( like the Mankato Free Press did) KEYC has a little video clip of Brian and the Titan Arum.
