TheFaceBook.com
—
by
This past weekend Gustavus Adolphus College was added to the list of schools on http://thefacebook.com. Since then I have noticed some interesting facts. A site like Thefacebook is very disruptive. As far as I can tell, it is the hottest website on campus right now. People in the computer labs, student workers computers, and just…

Internet Connection Issues
—
by
As some people on campus noticed, we had an issue with our internet connection last night. It appears as thought our internet service provider, Hickory Tech, had some issues. At about 1:15am, 1:20am, 2:30am, 2:36am, and 2:48am, it looks like out internet connection was down for a minute or two. As Wednesday night is Hickory…

Slow email
—
by
Late in the day yesterday (~4:00pm) the disks attached to our email server had a hiccup which caused a mirror system to fail. Thus the server needed to repair the mirror. Over the next several hours email was extremely slow. Users with small mailboxes (a few megs or less) were able to use email. Everyone…

Webserver downtime
—
by
Our mail website http://www.gustavus.edu was not functioning for a few minutes this morning because it could not contact its database backend. Turns out a loose network cable was the culprit. Guess that is just one more reason why we are rebuilding the server room this summer and cleaning it up a bit.

Firefox and Thunderbird updates
—
by
As some of you probably already know, there are new updates to Firefox (web browser) and Thunderbird (email client) that fix serious security issues. Secondary Mailserver Changes
—
by
I just wanted to let everyone know that we are putting a new email server into place as a secondary to solen. This new email server has been configured to better combat spam by enforcing mailservers to adhere to the email standards more strictly. It will also pass all the email through an email scanner…

Webalizer spam
—
by
This is probably something others have already noticed years ago, but I just came across it this week. For a year or so now we have been keeping statistics on some of our web servers by using the popular Webalizer software. You can usually view a sites stats by adding /usage at the end of…

Wireless in Lund
—
by
In preperation for tonights game, we have added a wireless access point to Lund. It is a nice, strong, wireless device that should cover a rather large area pretty well. If anyone uses it, I’d like to hear about your experiences. It is a little bit of an unusual setup for us because it is…

Res Hall Traffic
—
by
Something strange happened on our res-hall network again this morning. At about 7:00am this morning there was a ton of broadcast traffic. Something like 50k or 60k of traffic where we normally see about 5k-10k. Another symptom was that all of the switches in the dorms were seeing really high cpu usage. Especially the slower…
