This Weeks Status Update Posted on January 6th, 2006 by

Microsoft WMF Vulnerability: Obviously the big story this week was the Windows WMF vulnerability. I think we caught this one early, told people how to avoid infection, and now with the Windows patch being available, are fairly safe. I am still worried that a lot of computers were silently infected with some spyware, but chances are there is no way for us to know that at this time. Also our greylisting efforts seem to have paid off on this one as it appeared to keep much of the infected email at bay.

Fixed course email alias bugs: There were a few bugs in the way we were updating the course email aliases. We think we have fixed them so that aliases are more accurate now.

Disabled students with misconfigured access points: As was expected, many students returned to their dorm rooms and set up miscofigured wireless access points with DHCP servers and all that. We disabled a few and decided that in the future, the best way for students to configure their access point is to give it a different private IP address instead of the default 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

New switch in Norelius: There was one unmanaged 24port 10MB hub. in Norelius Section C. We upgraded that to a 10/100MB managed switch. Those 24 ports (rooms 101c – 112c) should now have a better network connection as well as now giving us the ability to disable a single port instead of the whole hub.

Wireless in College View: We added 2 wireless access points to College View. Most if not all of the dorm now appears to be covered. This is a test to see if we can cover a dorm in wireless and may disappear at any time. But if it works, then use it. If anyone has any feedback, we would like to hear it. Also the access point that used to be connected to the outdoor antenna on College View died at some point and we replaced it with a new linksys access point.

DVR’s and Dish for Foreign Languages: The Confer / Vickner building will soon be getting a Dish Network dish installed on its roof so that we can watch and record on DVR’s foreign language programing. Ethan and I helped setup the ReplayTV DVR’s (Digital Video Recorders like Tivo) such that you can stream video from them and watch it where ever you happen to be.

Tightened security at internet firewall: We adjusted a few of the rules on our internet firewall to help block people from trying to break into some of our systems such as our older Solaris machines and the network reserved for our switches.
