Gustavus Network Speeds Posted on September 2nd, 2006 by

I have had a couple of people ask me today, “How fast is our internet connection?” The quick answer to that is 30Mbit I1 and 45Mbit I2.

What that means is that we have a 30Mbit connection to the “internet”. We also have an additional 45Mbit connection to Internet2. Internet2 is a research network mainly consisting Universities and other Colleges. Thus if you are downloading a large file and you grab it from a mirror at the University of Minnesota, you will be using our relatively quiet 45Mbit I2 connection. Therefore our total internet bandwith is 75Mbit in each direction.

In the dorms we have 10/100 Mbit switches connecting all the ports in the rooms. Norelius, Complex, Sohre, International, Southwest each have a Gigabit connection to our core network where the other dorms each have a 100Mbit connection. As time and money allow, we will be upgrading the rest of the dorms to Gigabit as well.

If you have any questions or concerns about how the network at Gustavus is laid out, feel free to ask.
