  • Gustavus Homepage Issues

At about 4:00am Thursday September 14th, the SQL server that powers www.gustavus.edu stopped working. It looks like it tried to reboot and then got stuck. Just before 8:00am today I hit the reset button and it came back up. Thus www.gustavus.edu was unavailable during that time. Jeremy, please come back soon. Your server misses you!

  • Monday Night Networking Troubles

Last night the Helpline caught me on IM and let me know that the res-hall network was not exactly running smoothly. According to the reports, users plugged in in many dorms as well as via wireless were having trouble raching email, the internet, or the Gustavus home page. However the lab computers in the dorms…

  • Gustavus Network Speeds

I have had a couple of people ask me today, “How fast is our internet connection?” The quick answer to that is 30Mbit I1 and 45Mbit I2. What that means is that we have a 30Mbit connection to the “internet”. We also have an additional 45Mbit connection to Internet2. Internet2 is a research network mainly…

  • SpamAssassin Performance Issues

About 9 months ago we started using a MySQL database to store the bayes information for SpamAssassin. At first it worked great. It significantly reduced the load on our disk drives that used to house that information in the users home directories. Over time SpamAssassin became more popular and now it looks like over 3000…

  • Spamassassin Changes

Due to performance issues, I had to clean out everyone’s spamassassin learning (bayes) database and migrate it to a new server. As a result all spamassassin training has been reset and you may notice more spam making it into your mailbox. If you would like help re-training, I have made a quick and dirty page…

  • Unexpected Downtime

At about 2:45pm Thursday August 31, our primary mailserver failed causing all access to Gustavus email to stop. Email service was restored at about 3:05pm. As a result, some of you using non webmail based email clients may notice some messages are now marked as unread that were read just before the server failed. To…

  • Power Outage

So, a tornado nearly hit Gustavus again. Apparently it just missed us. Some homes and power lines to the west and east were not so lucky. Here are some images: http://pics.smarp.us/main.php?g2_itemId=11509 Once the power went out, the generator that powers Olin hall and the server room is supposed to kick in. Well, this time it…

  • Wildfire Updated

Over the weekend I upgraded our Wildfire Jabber server to the most recent version.  Now I believe that using our LDAP based groups will work much better.  Now if we could just get more people to use our own  Jabber IM server instead of AOL, MSN, or Yahoo…

  • Wireless update for International

We added a couple more wireless access points to International yesterday to give the East side of that building better coverage.

  • Wireless in Complex

Last Friday, Ethan, Alison, and I finished up installing a grand total of 12 new wireless access points in Complex.  Now North, Gibbs, and Sorensen all should have decent wireless internet access.
